Celebratng Our Challenges

It has been a while since I posted on Carpenoctum/Notesong and on Twitter https://twitter.com/deloresfisher . So much is happening in the world and here in the United States that I did not want to rush to join the waves of knee jerk responses that have been written as comment on every "controversial" social media event. Before continuing this post, however, I must state that I will soon address the mass shooting in South Carolina at the historically Black Emanuel AME church in which 9 people were gunned down while in a bible study. //www.cnn.com/2015/06/17/us/charleston-south-carolina-shooting/ AND NOW........TODAY"S POST: Diversity today is a buzz word. For those with disabilities, it is a strange situation, one of not really being seen in our humanity---"I didn't notice your spasms," of being stared down  for not being within the norm, or treated like a helpless entity----"Oh, you poor thing. Let me get that for you dear." without having be...

Black Science Student Organization(SDSU) : Hope For Haiti Fund Raiser

Every year for the last five years, the  San Diego State University BSSO (Black Student Science Organization)    http://www.bsso.org/BSSO/About_Us.html     has held a fund raiser to increase awareness about Haiti’s recovery and ongoing needs after the devastating earthquake of January 2010. It has been five years of hands on applied philanthropy to help Haitians help themselves. I enjoy interacting with  the BSSO and am honored to be invited to perform.             Delores Fisher with bassist Chris Swann The students of the Black Student Science Organization participate in internships and research projects year round. Black History Month 2015 in the USA

Poet, author, lecturer Delores Fisher A brief history of Black History month reveals its origins in Harvard trained historian Dr. Carter G. Woodson who nurtured its progression as a week long celebration during the late 1920s. The week he chose  included the birth dates of both president Abraham Lincoln (February 12th) and abolitionist Frederick Douglass (who chose the birth date of February 14th see   http://www.biography.com/people/frederick-douglass-9278324 ) . "In 1976, as the US was celebrating its bicentennial, the ASALH (Association for the Study of African American Life and History) expanded the traditional week-long celebration of African-American history to a month, and Black History Month was born. " (see   http://www.africanamericanhistorymonth.gov/about.html   ). Presid...

Happy New Year From Spreckles Organ Pavillion

Hello from the Balboa Park's Spreckles Organ.          Delores Fisher at the Spreckles Organ Pavilion New Year's Day It's 2015 and the Spreckles Organ is celebrating its 100th year! Despite unseasonably cold temperatures, the Organ Pavilion had plenty of open air concert goer for the traditional free New Year's Day performance.  As the afternoon approached early evening, however, the crowd thinned considerably. Still, we sat wrapped in blankets and warm coats to enjoy the music. Guest organists and performers have helped commemorate the event. San Diego's Civic organist, from the United Kingdom, Dr. Carol Williams shares the stage with many throughout the concert season too and is always encouraging young and old musicians to expand their musicality.                               ...

Holiday Seasons: What Are You Wrestling With?

Thanksgiving and especially Christmas seem to bring out the best and worst in folks. It's as if many just don't get beyond the yearly grumblings. That's not you? For those of you who don't fit into te popular culture holiday stereotype, keep reading. Thanksgiving seems to be turning into fight club, family style hre in America. Some people use social media to spread the reason for Christmas rejoicing,  the message of Christ's birth and salvation. However, social media gone wild is usually full of anonymous year end harsh commentary. And in face to face interaction, especially in our homes? Such anger, such disappointment, such bullying . . . Yes, I know, it is perhaps the only time when those family members weakest in moral integrity dare to appear on momma's doorstep for a family meal. And those wild child siblings--first, second, and third generation--always act up  right after the blessing of the food and the first,"Will you pass me the turkey?...

San Diego Comicfest 2014

As I sit here looking at my "Sgt. Fury and the Howling Commandos," "The New Warriors," and "Cyborg Blue Devil CAT WOMAN," I remember so many quiet early upstate Western New York Saturday mornings. After a bowl of cereal and milk, I would grab a pile of new comics, slide out the front door and jump onto our pink lounge set on our front porch and gleefully read about my favorite heroes, their challenges, their losses, their victories; life lessons on a printed page... sharing new story lines and favorite characters with friends who brought their comics and piled onto the outdoor lounge set beside me. San Diego Comicfest this year reminded me of why I stay connected to the comics community http://www.sdcomicfest.org/ I enjoyed participating on several panels and serving as moderator for the Friday evening Apocalypse/Dystopia Panel. The room was packed with apocalpyse fans and onlookers who provided lively questions and discussion. sandiegocomicfest .sched...
