Happy New Year From Spreckles Organ Pavillion

Hello from the Balboa Park's Spreckles Organ.
Delores Fisher at the Spreckles Organ Pavilion New Year's Day

It's 2015 and the Spreckles Organ is celebrating its 100th year! Despite unseasonably cold temperatures, the Organ Pavilion had plenty of open air concert goer for the traditional free New Year's Day performance.  As the afternoon approached early evening, however, the crowd thinned considerably. Still, we sat wrapped in blankets and warm coats to enjoy the music.

Guest organists and performers have helped commemorate the event. San Diego's Civic organist, from the United Kingdom, Dr. Carol Williams shares the stage with many throughout the concert season too and is always encouraging young and old musicians to expand their musicality.

Near the concert's end, Dr. Williams played holiday seasonal music that allowed her to show off many of the pipe organ's special qualities. After the finale, audience members had an opportunity to tour the organ works and to join Dr. Williams on stage.

Regular weekly Sunday afternoon concerts are also free. It's a time to sit, relax and appreciate the gift o John D. and Adolph Spreckles donated 100 years ago www.balboapark.org/in-the-park/spreckels-organ-pavilion .

Also take time to enjoy Balboa park in it's celebration too!

Starla Lewis Professor Emeritus: A New Year's Gift January 2024 Post 1

We all think about those negative influences that we would all like to forget; yet we often neglect to acknowledge those positive warriors who quietly and compassionately help us shoulder dark toxic angst, while nurturing us back to the light of healthy joy.  This 2024 January post is to celebrate one of the positive life warrior-healers that I cherish. If you have one of these people in your life, did you stop and give God thanks for them? (If you don't have one, prayerfully your life will soon be blessed. If you do and you didn't offer thanks yet---how about doing it now?) In the traditional Black American community, we have a custom known as "Give them their flowers (while they yet live)." Selfless fabulous people have invested quality time and positivity into my life. This first post is a huge thank you/shout out and a huge Kuumba bouquet of red fragrant roses to my community minded sistah-- professor Starla Lewis! I also played accompanied the Calvary Baptist Church Youth Choir under the direction of Carol Durgan.  The church was known as Second Baptist in 1889 on the corner of  1st and B street. It was moved to  the corner of  then Crosby Street, https://www.calvarybcsd.org/history/   now known as 719 Cesar E. Chavez Pkwy. and at this time is following the leadership of pastor Dr. Emanuel Whipple Sr. And this Sunday in September 2012 Calvary Baptist Church had a Youth Choir Reunion Concert at 3:30. The concert was a musical extravaganza! This post is going viral so I must do a 2024 update: Hello Dr. Buchanon. Thank you for reading my post from 2012. I am honored!!!! For addition...
