Happy New Year From Spreckles Organ Pavillion

Hello from the Balboa Park's Spreckles Organ.          Delores Fisher at the Spreckles Organ Pavilion New Year's Day It's 2015 and the Spreckles Organ is celebrating its 100th year! Despite unseasonably cold temperatures, the Organ Pavilion had plenty of open air concert goer for the traditional free New Year's Day performance.  As the afternoon approached early evening, however, the crowd thinned considerably. Still, we sat wrapped in blankets and warm coats to enjoy the music. Guest organists and performers have helped commemorate the event. San Diego's Civic organist, from the United Kingdom, Dr. Carol Williams shares the stage with many throughout the concert season too and is always encouraging young and old musicians to expand their musicality.                               ...

Holiday Seasons: What Are You Wrestling With?

Thanksgiving and especially Christmas seem to bring out the best and worst in folks. It's as if many just don't get beyond the yearly grumblings. That's not you? For those of you who don't fit into te popular culture holiday stereotype, keep reading. Thanksgiving seems to be turning into fight club, family style hre in America. Some people use social media to spread the reason for Christmas rejoicing,  the message of Christ's birth and salvation. However, social media gone wild is usually full of anonymous year end harsh commentary. And in face to face interaction, especially in our homes? Such anger, such disappointment, such bullying . . . Yes, I know, it is perhaps the only time when those family members weakest in moral integrity dare to appear on momma's doorstep for a family meal. And those wild child siblings--first, second, and third generation--always act up  right after the blessing of the food and the first,"Will you pass me the turkey?...

San Diego Comicfest 2014

As I sit here looking at my "Sgt. Fury and the Howling Commandos," "The New Warriors," and "Cyborg Blue Devil CAT WOMAN," I remember so many quiet early upstate Western New York Saturday mornings. After a bowl of cereal and milk, I would grab a pile of new comics, slide out the front door and jump onto our pink lounge set on our front porch and gleefully read about my favorite heroes, their challenges, their losses, their victories; life lessons on a printed page... sharing new story lines and favorite characters with friends who brought their comics and piled onto the outdoor lounge set beside me. San Diego Comicfest this year reminded me of why I stay connected to the comics community http://www.sdcomicfest.org/ I enjoyed participating on several panels and serving as moderator for the Friday evening Apocalypse/Dystopia Panel. The room was packed with apocalpyse fans and onlookers who provided lively questions and discussion. sandiegocomicfest .sched...

The Comic-Con Chronlcles 2014 Ending: Post #4

Well . . . it's been almost two weeks since Comic-Con International ended here in San Diego. A few disturbing aftermath situations have surfaced. One involved the Walking Dead "Smash Mob" Walk during which a deaf man allegedly panicking, stepping on the accelerator, and running over a cosplay zombie woman in her sixties as  zombies swarmed his car. The "Smash Mob" apparently became agitated and banged on his vehicle trying to get him to stop. However, the driver claims he did not know he had run over anyone. Still healing from her injuries, the hospitalized woman is resting. The driver's perception of the incident: http://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/local/San-Diego-Zombie-Walk-Driver-Hits-Woman-Comic-Con--270386361.html Another incident involved a seventeen year old whose alleged brutal beating/assault was initially discussed on social media by a friend. As of August first, after several days of investigation, the police believe the injuries resulted fro...

The 2014 Comic Con Chronicles Cosplay Edition: Friday part 3

Insider host Kevin Frazier and me (Delores Fisher) First, let me say, "Thank you" to Insider host Kevin Frazier for taking time out for a photo. He is gracious and kind.(Updated with apologies . . . had another host on my mind when I wrote the original post).  I am a Kevin Frazier fan and was so excited . . .) Crowds have swelled up past the 100,000 mark as Comic Con International extends itself to the local general public with outside free venues and "give aways" and also to the world with international media coverage. Walking along Bayside or along Harbor Drive, "lookey loos" without tickets to inside Comic Con workshops, book signings, and guest appearances can still enjoy outside activities and events. Outside venues include the Interactive Zone and the Assassins Creed obstacle course, there is also a ""zombie infested" Walking Dead course with...

The 2014 Comic Con Chronicles Post 2 Wednesday

Hey ya'll, it's getting hot! (Delores Fisher) Tuesday was a relatively quiet sunny day with only a few hundred early bird Comic Con fans around the downtown Convention Center and on public transportation. Tuesday evening work crews busily constructed obstacles courses, sets, tents, and buildings during the night as the evening got really warm.                                                Night set up in front of Marriott Hotel This morning, Wednesday,  it seemed as if conventioneers had increased to about 1,000 people. Volunteers looked tired already and the work crew setting up various exhibits and interactive special e...
