Hello to fans across the globe. 2023 is here!
Not really making any new year resolutions. Taking life one day at a time as the title of that old Country and Western Christian song says by Marijohn Wilkin and Kris Kristofferson. See Donna Leagh Mathews' brief but informative coverage of the song's origin https://dianaleaghmatthews.com/one-day-at-a-time/
So many changes for all of us as we learn to live with the global reality of COVID as an endemic illness.
It seems we are still divided here in the United States--but a little more respectful--of our choices to mask or not as mandates lift and actual cases lessen. It's nice to take a stroll around our San Diego California pier and Embarcadero as returning tourists and local residents interact without masking issues. Although I must admit, I wish those who don't cover their mouths when they cough or sneeze would try a little harder to not share their "spray" with others. And yes, I do try to quietly look the other way or hold my breath or simply pull up my mask to avoid their droplets. It's not ALWAYS allergy related . . .Still, I'm thankful that we can be outdoors more.
Performing outdoors can be still be challenging; despite distancing, allergies, and weird 21st century weather that is at times uncomfortably hotter or colder than our norm. Colder--not like the Northeastern U.S. polar blasts that are happening right now, but much cooler into the 30s and low 4os with unexpected strong mid Winter gusty breezes. The difference in temperature is unsettling at an open air concert. However, I am enjoying the increase in open air venues and events.
Our local San Diego poet's scene is buzzing with activity online as well as in person, indoors and out.

I got a chance to do spoken word at a December Christmas party. It was a way to present recognition of our elders' struggle to maintain their link to humanity in our challenging 21st century social dynamics.
Many active seniors still work outside the home. Active seniors also sometimes serve as family care givers themselves, taking care of nieces, nephews, their elders, their children or grand children. Those whose bodies or minds are frail, live in facilities. There lives are regulated. They are confined . . .COVID or not.
It's important to interact with our elders more positively, especially those elders in facilities who are most vulnerable. At the Christmas party of a local organisation, I performed this original poem.

Local San Diego poets and the audience snuggled up in warm clothes, sat by outdoor heaters, or got cozy in wrap around blankets to enjoy the food, the music, and spoken word.
Happy 2023!
