                                                      Delores Fisher blogger/educator

A lot of catching up to do but first, hello to my Fan Base readers! I really appreciate your support, especially during this new November 2021 Pandemic upsurge.

Greetings to new readers around the world.

Wanted to share a few photos and memories of events over the months since the last post.

SUMMER GREETINGS!!!

Blogger Delores Fisher at San Diego AfroCon 2021

I got to attend AFROCON San Diego!!!!!!!!!

EDFU - News - EDFU FOUNDATION INC.

San Diego's  Afrofuturism Convention: AFROCON  San Diego has a cultural powerhouse Dr. LaWana Richmond. She is the co-founder of the AfroFuturism Lounge and the inaugural launching of AFROCON 2021. When I arrived the convention, Dr. Richmond was extremely busy, but stopped to say hello before she went into the event's official press room for interviews https://www.kpbs.org/news/2021/08/30/afro-con-coming-weekend

It was thrilling to see this first official date arrive!

I had attended a version of the Afrofuturist Lounge a few years ago in 2018. Illustrators Jon Jennings and Stacey Robinson talked with me and took the time to offer advice on how to pursue my doctorate with an emphasis in popular culture. Both Jennings and Robinson, mentioned in Ytasha Womack's groundbreaking text Afrofuturism: The World of Black Sci-fi And Fantasy Culture,  collaborated with writer Tony Medina on the critically acclaimed graphic novel I Am Alphonso Jones.  https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/34099859-i-am-alfonso-jones

Afrofuturists from the San Diego region and beyond enjoyed the beginning of a local movement supported by a larger global Afrofuturism community as evidenced by interview response of Eric M. Cooper!

Like many here in San Diego California, I have been awaiting this fully realized Afrofuturism Convention version of the 2018 inaugural historic kick-off event in San Diego's East Village.

In 2020, after so much anticipation, it was a pleasure to walk through the exhibit Hall and talk to various vendors and graphic artists. We were all vaccinated and many of us wore masks, mindful of the health implications. We occasionally removed the masks for a few moments to take photo op moments, but everyone in attendance was cautious and mindfully community health oriented.

Here are a few photo moments:

I even got to hang out with one of my favorite San Diego based premier graphic artists, and Black Comix convention promoter Keithan Jones. https://www.kid-comics.com/blackcom-xday.html

Keithan Jones is the founder of Kid Comics and he is also a force behind the San Diego's annual Black Comix Day   San Diego:  https://sdmonitornews.com/tag/black-comix-day-2020/  He continues to work in the community of San Diego although he is well known nationally in the comix world. I have been following his work for several years and have one of his personally autographed posters in my office.

Part of A Legacy:Calvary Baptist Church San Diego

Those of you following me on Twitter and at The Center For World Music: https://centerforworldmusic.org/about-us/board/ know that I was a pianist at Calvary Baptist Church in San Diego California back in the day. Charles Ray was the organist/pianist, professor Jean Wesson was the music director. I also played accompanied the Calvary Baptist Church Youth Choir under the direction of Carol Durgan.  The church was known as Second Baptist in 1889 on the corner of  1st and B street. It was moved to  the corner of  then Crosby Street, https://www.calvarybcsd.org/history/   now known as 719 Cesar E. Chavez Pkwy. and at this time is following the leadership of pastor Dr. Emanuel Whipple Sr. And this Sunday in September 2012 Calvary Baptist Church had a Youth Choir Reunion Concert at 3:30. The concert was a musical extravaganza! This post is going viral so I must do a 2024 update: Hello Dr. Buchanon. Thank you for reading my post from 2012. I am honored!!!! Jellyfish around San Diego Embarcadero and Broadway Pier

Delores Fisher Blogger on an early Morning stroll Jellyfish are visiting the San Diego CA. Broadway Pier and Embarcadero again. Jellyfish appeared to swarm in this same area in 2012. Although I posted about the Black Nettle Jellyfish in July 2012, this was the first time since that year that I have seen any type of jellyfish in such numbers at the pier. http://carpenoctum2.blogspot.com/2012/08/black-sea-nettle-jellyfish-at.html   However, multiple sightings of similar and other jellyfish have increased since 2012. Several have been posted on youtube. 2015 has been an odd weather year for San Diego with heat and odd rainfall days (despite our drought). It is possible that temperature shifts are part of the reason why jellyfish are in our bays and near our beaches.  Our October weather has been unseasonably hot this early fall, similar to temperatures during earlier 2015 seasonal sightings.  Shannon Handy reported on a North County swarm of Sail jellyfish in May.

Professor Richard Thompson                       San Diego State University School of Music and Dance Professor Richard Thompson Composer/Pianist Exciting news!!!!!!! Richard Thompson has consented to an interview to discuss his new chamber opera: "Mask in the Mirror." The work-in-progress premiered informally at San Diego State University featuring School of Music and Dance vocal faculty and guest vocalists. Thompson has been working on the orchestration for approximately a year now. Originally from Aberdeen Scotland, Thompson is an assistant professor of music in San Diego State's School of Music and Dance. He will take time during his national summer performance schedule to give us not only an inside perspective on the inspiration behind "Mask in the Mirror," but also reflections on his compositional process as a pianist/composer. An excerpt from his official bio states,"His compositions combine European
