Hello to new readers in Japan, Spain, Ukraine, and Mexico!
It's been a while since my previous post, so here's an October update before my second Comic Con 2019 Literacy Conference post.
A huge, grateful shout out to San Diego Who Con (Dr. Who Convention). http://www.sdwhocon.com/
If you are a local or global Dr. Who fan, get your tickets early because they sell out fast. Not only does Who Con present Futurism, space travel, dimensional thinking, Sci-Fi, and fantasy, it also presents panels on hard science topics.
Speaking of hard science, thank you to the BSSO (Black Student Sciences Organization) from San Diego State for their insightful panel discussion about the importance of encouraging people of color who are interested and talented in STEM to pursue higher education opportunities and careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. The BSSO panel also discussed their recent and ongoing scientific research.
It was a pleasure to experience San Diego Who Con's family oriented ambience as an audience member and as a panel discussant.
I presented my preliminary research on the Dr. Who series and various aspects of musical genres embedded into several specific story lines during the series. I also cover ways in which musicians have created cover songs that introduce viewers to "the Dr." These uses of music provide socio-cultural contexts for location, era, and "backstories."
Notesong/Carpenoctum followers know my fascination with robots. I have a miniature robot that I sometimes carry around from class to class on campus at San Diego State University. Students enjoy this visual when we discuss technology, the 21st century, and the importance of being an effective speaker on multiple media platforms.
