Delores Fisher's April Spring 2019 Photo Moments

Hey there everyone! Shout out to Poland, Canada, and France.

It's spring time in San Diego California. We  are having rain, sun, and floral super blooms all over the place, poppies, jacaranda trees, and birds of paradise, oh my!

Since I got such a response to some of my previous posts with photo memories, thought I'd do something unusual: instead of sharing my thoughts in words, I decided to post photos and save my blog article about country and western award winning vocalist and host of the American Country Music Awards 2019, Reba McEntire, for next month.
                                    Reba McEntire

If you hear the fragility, the sadness, and the grit in her voice, know that like us common folks, her life has not been all happiness. Reba McEntire doesn't pretend that it was or is. And when it comes ro San Diego California, according to an interview, McEntire has a tragic connection to San Diego history. California.https://tasteofcountry.com/reba-mcentire-band-died-plane-crash-secret-history/

Reba has a brand new album out. I do want to say quite strongly however, that I've already played  several tracks from the album  "Stronger Than The Truth" more than several times already. Listen to "In His Mind," "The Clown,"or "Storm In A Shot Glass."

I like 'em all. Here's another one of my favorites:

And now several photo shares:

basic American comfort food and good brewed coffee.
Look for the diner near the corner across from the Cith College station.
The ambiance is retro-sixties decor with friendly family style table service.

San Diego Urban Art

It's an exciting era in San Diego.  Visual artists are being hired to paint all over San Diego. Their visual creations are shaping a distinctive Southern California city "flavah" that I call urban canvas street art. If you live here,  are visiting, or plan to visit our sunny city, check out all the free sidewalk and building artworks. Here are a few samples of our urban sidewalk canvas below.

Vincent Van Gogh?   Yep

                                      Aerosol Artist Chris Konecki.
Chris has several memorable works around the city.
Unfortunately, this gem of an art mural is now painted over. The building has a series of color shading similar to what one sees when looking at a selection of possible paint colors for a house or room renovation.  And yes . . .it has had a building "make-over" renovation.

This Chris Konecki extra large (XXL) mural is still visible near 8th and Broadway.

Different Artist--this mural near the Market Street/East Village trolley
tracks is now painted over and altered to a facade of greys.

Of course, I  can not forget scenes from our harbor area.

We San Diegans like to express ourselves with T-shirts. Using political, cultural,  or just plain weird slogans, our T-shirt shops produce traditional solid colors and tie dye day-glo splashes of retro-psychedelic 70s patterns. Long to the mid-thigh over hip hop baggy jeans (or to cover those "really?" too tight skinny jeans) all the way to midriff- abs- belly button for public admiration coupled with too short daisy dukes, we really like our T-shirt expressivity.

Check out this T-shirt quote.

Buskers

And so is our busker community- with rock balancers, magicians, clowns, mimes, balloon shapers, and street musicians who entertain for tips or play "real good for free."

The very first interview with Rabindra.

Seriously, that Joni Mitchell paraphrase about playing real good for free is San Diego vintage from Classical to Blues to Rock n' roll. Speaking of Blues music, guitar/singer Eric Freeman was here in San Diego for a hot minute. I got a chance to talk to him a few years ago.

Part of A Legacy:Calvary Baptist Church San Diego

Those of you following me on Twitter and at The Center For World Music: https://centerforworldmusic.org/about-us/board/ know that I was a pianist at Calvary Baptist Church in San Diego California back in the day. Charles Ray was the organist/pianist, professor Jean Wesson was the music director. I also played accompanied the Calvary Baptist Church Youth Choir under the direction of Carol Durgan.  The church was known as Second Baptist in 1889 on the corner of  1st and B street. It was moved to  the corner of  then Crosby Street, https://www.calvarybcsd.org/history/   now known as 719 Cesar E. Chavez Pkwy. and at this time is following the leadership of pastor Dr. Emanuel Whipple Sr. And this Sunday in September 2012 Calvary Baptist Church had a Youth Choir Reunion Concert at 3:30. The concert was a musical extravaganza! This post is going viral so I must do a 2024 update: Hello Dr. Buchanon. Thank you for reading my post from 2012. I am honored!!!! Jellyfish around San Diego Embarcadero and Broadway Pier

Delores Fisher Blogger on an early Morning stroll Jellyfish are visiting the San Diego CA. Broadway Pier and Embarcadero again. Jellyfish appeared to swarm in this same area in 2012. Although I posted about the Black Nettle Jellyfish in July 2012, this was the first time since that year that I have seen any type of jellyfish in such numbers at the pier. http://carpenoctum2.blogspot.com/2012/08/black-sea-nettle-jellyfish-at.html   However, multiple sightings of similar and other jellyfish have increased since 2012. Several have been posted on youtube. 2015 has been an odd weather year for San Diego with heat and odd rainfall days (despite our drought). It is possible that temperature shifts are part of the reason why jellyfish are in our bays and near our beaches.  Our October weather has been unseasonably hot this early fall, similar to temperatures during earlier 2015 seasonal sightings.  Shannon Handy reported on a North County swarm of Sail jellyfish in May.

Richard Thompson Chamber Opera "Mask in the Mirror"

Professor Richard Thompson                       San Diego State University School of Music and Dance Professor Richard Thompson Composer/Pianist Exciting news!!!!!!! Richard Thompson has consented to an interview to discuss his new chamber opera: "Mask in the Mirror." The work-in-progress premiered informally at San Diego State University featuring School of Music and Dance vocal faculty and guest vocalists. Thompson has been working on the orchestration for approximately a year now. Originally from Aberdeen Scotland, Thompson is an assistant professor of music in San Diego State's School of Music and Dance. He will take time during his national summer performance schedule to give us not only an inside perspective on the inspiration behind "Mask in the Mirror," but also reflections on his compositional process as a pianist/composer.
