Event host and nationally acclaimed poet Jim Moreno http://www.jimpoet.com/ sent this exciting press release. I say exciting because Viet is a dynamic young man whose community heart embraces all people. His ongoing activism for youth education and empowerment is well known locally here in San Diego and also on the national spotlight. This young man walks the walk and talks the talk. Here is a blast from the past . . . . . .a young Viet Mai performing one of his now signature works.
I met Viet several years ago. He is a founding member of
in the artistic collective known as Collective Purpose whose members include Ant Black, Chris Wilson, Rudy Franciso, Kendrick Dial and Jessica Molina http://collectivepurpose.squarespace.com/;jsessionid=D529789750279EDCA50BF007B55D69BD.web124 and hosts "Elevated" their bi-weekly open mic.
In person he is engagingly soft
spoken, his poetic voice is anything but laid back and quiet. His fierce down to earth
life insight illuminates twenty-first century person-hood, spaces of
the oppressed, and "agency"personal and group. From our very first
meeting, he impressed me as a young creative voice well worth hearing and today, several years later, he has proven that he is a cultural voice of this age.
Due to an ongoing chest cold, I was really disappointed that poor health and a need to rest blocked my presence. However, thanks to Jim Moreno's graciousness, I share a comment about Viet Mai's feature, the venue's host, Poet Jim Moreno's reason for starting the new open mic, and a little more about Viet in the RISING ARTISTS 2012-2013 section of notesong http://carpenoctum2.blogspot.com/p/rising-artists-2012.html
