Kathleen Denny San Diego International Fringe Festival 2017

Kathleen Denny Writer/Performance Artist San Diego 2017 San Diego International Fringe Festival is in its 5th year. It's Kathleen Denny's 1st San Diego Fringe. I hope she comes back. Her show, "Nice Is Not What We Do" directed by Mark Kenward is fascinating. Kevin Patterson has another hit series this year from local  producer directors like K.L. Brisby and Gingerlily Lowe-(The Yellow Hell"), national performers: Kathleen Denny-"Nice Is Not What We Do", and international writers, performers, producers, directors like bi-national artist Melissa Cisneros-Mexico ("Juego De Las Microacciones") to Giorgia Mazzucato-Italy "(Lifegate"). Kathleen Denny knows how to plug a show. She is a gracious and engaging conversationalist. I was so excited about seeing the "Big Kitchen-A Counter Cultural Cabaret Take 2" that I had arrived a half hour early. Ms Denny and I sta...

Olga Gutierrez Garcia: International Poet Reads at Cafe Cabaret San Diego CA.

Poet Olga Gutierrez-Garcia Hello this June to new readers in Australia, Portugal, Ukraine, and Indonesia. San Diego has had a burst of sunshine. For those of you planning to visit, we still have evening fog rolling in and temperature drops; compared to hot days, a few degrees colder is most appreciated. The changing temperature from May/grey, June/Gloom to sunny definitely was a plus for Olga Garcia's reading at San Diego's Cafe Cabaret. I see a flier in my email a few days earlier and consider going to the reading. Olga's new works are full of flavorful and sometimes abrasively juxtaposed images and metaphors. Host Jim Moreno is making sure that people get the ...

GZA Lecture SDSU: Race, Globalization, and Hip Hop in American Culture

Delores Fisher  June reminiscing The flier stated: GZA would lecture at San Diego State on April 11, 2017. I blinked my eyes in disbelief. GZA? Wu-Tang Clan's GZA? Wha-a-a-at? I kept the flier in my briefcase, took it out several times for those two weeks before the event. It was going take careful scheduling. On April 11th, I would be teaching the Tuesday/Thursday Afras 140 Oral Communication class that spanned early morning into early noon on the other side of campus. It was a sure bet that a GZA speaking event event would have standing room only. (It did--someone kindly gave me their seat.) I excitedly decided to hear him in person. I  stayed a...

Saying Goodbye: Rock and Roll's Chuck Berry

This is a personal post. One of sadness and a sense of loss as so many musicians from my childhood through adulthood, musicians who are like distant fictive kin,  intimates who have been at times during relationship break-ups and start ups--closer often than family or friends.  Delores Fisher (during my performer's transition to serious adulthood) These musicians gave me solace during my "party down" disco club kid years and funky town foggy afternoon "git on up" young adult do I really have to come in to work early today? malaise. In the last few years, quite a few of them have steadily exited their way stage right off our world stage and on into eternity. So many...I just want to talk a little about Chuck Berry. Bad Boy with gleaming eyes and a tongue-in- cheek smile that lit young girls' hearts and erotic imaginings of older women nostalgic for husbands who had let the spark of excitement fade, Chuck Berry wore his hair in a style that we ca...

Delores Fisher: A Personal Note To My Carpe Noctum Readers

Hello to South Africa, Czechia, Sweden, and Poland! And, a special thank you to all my readers around the world. Read newest post for February 2018 at http://carpenoctum2.blogspot.com/2018/02/brenda-de-flanders-black-history.html                                        Delores Fisher educator/blogger Just want to talk about a few events and people whose lives and projects have helped me smile through the last few weeks of flu related illness. Thanks to my doctor for intervening with gentle yet cautionary medical advice and for helping me to slow down. Our 21st century array of several effective vaccines seem to be working against recent flu outbreaks, but be cautious; nature previously revealed in 1918 its ability to mutate viruses with disastrously unpredictable global consequences. http...
