Delores Fisher's April 2018 Update

Hello everyone. Especially to you new readers in Indonesia. Welcome!

                                    Delores Fisher pianist/blogger/lecturer

I have several summer music engagements  in the works and that means more time at the keyboard when not teaching,  grading papers, lecturing, appearing on panel discussions.

Ah yes . . . It's April already. So much is going on here in the USA that I wanted to write about a few music events.

The Center for World Music is sponsoring several world music concerts. Musicians from all over the world share their artistry with San Diegans and tourists each year as guest performers and as artists in residence. https://centerforworldmusic.org/about-us/

One major concert is by South African singer Nomsa Burkhardt. https://centerforworldmusic.org/event/zulu-burkhardt/  She performed for the Africana Studies Department at SDSU during our Nelson Mandela Memorial.

This January 2018, she also performed during our  annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Luncheon at San Diego State University. She joins the list of performers who have graciously shared their talents with the campus and community audience ( including international vocalist Coral MacFarland -Thuet see video from last year's luncheon   https://africana.sdsu.edu/index.htm    )

Norma Burkhardt and Center for World Music's Monica Emery

In addition to professional performance concerts, she also teaches local students in the Center For World Music's classroom artist in residence program.

For those of you who enjoy Gospel music, the San Diego based Martin Luther King Jr. Community Choir, comprised of diverse vocalists under the direction of Kenneth Anderson, has published their concert schedule.  http://www.mlkccsd.org/      Anderson also teaches, directs, and often accompanies (on keyboard) the UCSD Gospel Choir.

The San Diego Martin Luther King Jr Community Choir performed at their annual scholarship drive. The funds provide scholarships for young musicians http://mlkccsd.org/grants.html

And, of course one of my favorite spoken word/musical groups is busy recording. Lyrical Groove is on the move. Here's the link that shares the back story behind their newest "hot drop." https://www.nbcsandiego.com/blogs/sounddiego/Wake-Up-With-the-Lyrical-Groove-470755123.html
The group might be touring in the summer, see them on stage if you can.

Take a listen:

And, that's a wrap--sort of.

Oh yes . . .as the Spring semester ends, I want to give a shout out to students in the Africana Studies 466 Afrofuturism class/community . . .You Rock.  I am composing again and am working on a set of variations for piano and voice,  piano and flue, and solo piano. Thank you for the inspiration!

PS.  Besides preparing for concerts and recitals, planning is going on behind the scenes for a rousingly informative appearance on a panel whose discussion focus is the amazingly always variable Grace Jones at Comic Fest in San Diego this month http://www.sdcomicfest.org/programming/

Will fill you in later!

Part of A Legacy:Calvary Baptist Church San Diego

Those of you following me on Twitter and at The Center For World Music: https://centerforworldmusic.org/about-us/board/ know that I was a pianist at Calvary Baptist Church in San Diego California back in the day. Charles Ray was the organist/pianist, professor Jean Wesson was the music director. I also played accompanied the Calvary Baptist Church Youth Choir under the direction of Carol Durgan.  The church was known as Second Baptist in 1889 on the corner of  1st and B street. It was moved to  the corner of  then Crosby Street, https://www.calvarybcsd.org/history/   now known as 719 Cesar E. Chavez Pkwy. and at this time is following the leadership of pastor Dr. Emanuel Whipple Sr. And this Sunday in September 2012 Calvary Baptist Church had a Youth Choir Reunion Concert at 3:30. The concert was a musical extravaganza! This post is going viral so I must do a 2024 update: Hello Dr. Buchanon. Thank you for reading my post from 2012. I am honored!!!! Jellyfish around San Diego Embarcadero and Broadway Pier

Delores Fisher Blogger on an early Morning stroll Jellyfish are visiting the San Diego CA. Broadway Pier and Embarcadero again. Jellyfish appeared to swarm in this same area in 2012. Although I posted about the Black Nettle Jellyfish in July 2012, this was the first time since that year that I have seen any type of jellyfish in such numbers at the pier. http://carpenoctum2.blogspot.com/2012/08/black-sea-nettle-jellyfish-at.html   However, multiple sightings of similar and other jellyfish have increased since 2012. Several have been posted on youtube. 2015 has been an odd weather year for San Diego with heat and odd rainfall days (despite our drought). It is possible that temperature shifts are part of the reason why jellyfish are in our bays and near our beaches.  Our October weather has been unseasonably hot this early fall, similar to temperatures during earlier 2015 seasonal sightings.  Shannon Handy reported on a North County swarm of Sail jellyfish in May.

Professor Richard Thompson                       San Diego State University School of Music and Dance Professor Richard Thompson Composer/Pianist Exciting news!!!!!!! Richard Thompson has consented to an interview to discuss his new chamber opera: "Mask in the Mirror." Thompson has been working on the orchestration for approximately a year now. Originally from Aberdeen Scotland, Thompson is an assistant professor of music in San Diego State's School of Music and Dance. He will take time during his national summer performance schedule to give us not only an inside perspective on the inspiration behind "Mask in the Mirror," but also reflections on his compositional process as a pianist/composer. An excerpt from his official bio states,"His compositions combine European
