As New Year's Eve Approaches

As the yearly count down swags and boogies to electro-night club Dub beat around the county, tourists and locals--check out the smaller news print and online sources (like my favorites) Night and Day, City Beat, the Troubador, and the Reader. This New Year's Eve San Diego will offer a variety flavored evening ranging from traditional quiet bonding at home, church watch night services, public accessible open air park parties, to mega private expensive themed festivities: 2011 is ending in our Western measurement scheme called "time" that marks our existence. It has been an intense year.

For those who want and like to laugh on New Year's Eve, try Horton Plaza's new comedy stage.

Mad House Comedy Club is nestled between the Panda Inn and Nordstrums on the mall's upper level. It offers Lunch and Dinner daily with a menu of steaks, salads, burgers and much more. It is on the circuit, which means audiences can enjoy national touring shows. Call 619-702-6666.  The marquis currently features performances by Erik Knowles and Steve Bowman. A special appearance of SNL cast member Jeff Richards at 7:00PM and at 10:00PM is slated for New Year's Eve.

And aspiring future stars . . . the Mad House Comedy Club also boasts a Tuesday open mic/new talent night at 7:00PM (NO COVER CHARGE!!!!). A club like this downtown???? It's about time. So, get your comedy on 'cause as 2012 does a funky two-step into actuality, we may really need to keep a sense of humor in our survival toolkit. A peek at the club's January calendar reveals a funfilled month of romp . . . including appearances by one of my favorites (Loni Love) from the Chelsea Lately Show. Unh hmn.....Hey Girl!!!

Part of A Legacy:Calvary Baptist Church San Diego

Those of you following me on Twitter and at The Center For World Music: https://centerforworldmusic.org/about-us/board/ know that I was a pianist at Calvary Baptist Church in San Diego California back in the day. Charles Ray was the organist/pianist, professor Jean Wesson was the music director. I also played accompanied the Calvary Baptist Church Youth Choir under the direction of Carol Durgan.  The church was known as Second Baptist in 1889 on the corner of  1st and B street. It was moved to  the corner of  then Crosby Street, https://www.calvarybcsd.org/history/   now known as 719 Cesar E. Chavez Pkwy. and at this time is following the leadership of pastor Dr. Emanuel Whipple Sr. And this Sunday in September 2012 Calvary Baptist Church had a Youth Choir Reunion Concert at 3:30. The concert was a musical extravaganza! This post is going viral so I must do a 2024 update: Hello Dr. Buchanon. Thank you for reading my post from 2012. I am honored!!!! Jellyfish around San Diego Embarcadero and Broadway Pier

Delores Fisher Blogger on an early Morning stroll Jellyfish are visiting the San Diego CA. Broadway Pier and Embarcadero again. Jellyfish appeared to swarm in this same area in 2012. Although I posted about the Black Nettle Jellyfish in July 2012, this was the first time since that year that I have seen any type of jellyfish in such numbers at the pier. http://carpenoctum2.blogspot.com/2012/08/black-sea-nettle-jellyfish-at.html   However, multiple sightings of similar and other jellyfish have increased since 2012. Several have been posted on youtube. 2015 has been an odd weather year for San Diego with heat and odd rainfall days (despite our drought). It is possible that temperature shifts are part of the reason why jellyfish are in our bays and near our beaches.  Our October weather has been unseasonably hot this early fall, similar to temperatures during earlier 2015 seasonal sightings.  Shannon Handy reported on a North County swarm of Sail jellyfish in May.

April 2023: A Glimpse of Homeless Performer Glen "Pops" Freeman's visit to San Diego CA in 2022 Post 4

Yes, I used the term homeless in the title as opposed to other more PC terms.  After reading various articles and blogs, including an enlightening reminder by Joe Omundson at  https://medium.com/ecofrugality/stop-confusing-homeless-and-houseless-39b055d29ea3  , the terms homeless and living on the streets seem to be labels these musicians and artists I will write about this summer prefer.                   Glen Pops Freeman photo by Delores Fisher They have shared their stories about COVID 19, feeling invisible, how they spend their daily lives, the precious flow time spent on the streets, maintaining hope while facing pandemic dynamics, a humbling experience they are allowing me to share with you.                                                     I've written about gen eral  homelessness in San Diego California from different socio-political perspectives over the years in various blog posts(for a recent [for a recent post, see https://carpenoctum2.blogspot.com/2022/07/the-unh
