Delores Fisher: Photo Flashbacks of a Blogger June 2018

Delores Fisher during semester office hours

A global hello and warm hug to people with disabilities!

It's almost summer 2018 here in San Diego California. From time to time, I do a brief summary of the previous year and what I plan for the coming year. This summer, I decided to do a photo flashback, a review of images--many of which I chose not to include in previous posts over the years.

So, summer blogging hours are now open, welcome to a small part of my world!

Hey Notesong/ Carpenoctum2 readers, I still like to "take strolls" as much as possible, although I am not able to walk as fast or as far. San Diego harbor, Balboa Park, East Village San Diego continue to provide spaces of comfort and relative(though tourist filled)peace.

From time to time, I post about disability and coping in a world that is at times...surprisingly fascinating. Many of you have read about my struggles with a physical disability that at this point is relentlessly present and still incurable. My most recent change is from using one cane/crutch to using canes/crutches. My physical therapist is a no nonsense woman. My summer was painful, full of assigned exercises and self monitoring.

After the first two weeks, anger and frustration almost caused me to quit. But, a gradual improvement in muscle strength, a reduction in painful spasms, and an noticeable increase in physical stamina kept me praying and trying. It has not been easy.

As I am now known to say, "This works. I'm still walking."  I just have to be more aware of where and how I'm walking.

And of course I have been practicing for concerts and poetry readings. Shout out to Center For World Music outreach program headed by Stacey Barnett. I enjoyed sharing Afro Classical piano music with seniors last week. A few of the composers whose piano works I played: Afro-Canadian composer R. Nathaniel Dett,  Afro-British composer Samuel Coleridge Taylor, African American composers Scott Joplin, and Harry T. Burleigh.

Stacey, me and a resident after the concert

I took a few days off to rest before going back into preparations for several other appearances.

Oh yea . . .shout out to San Diego International Fringe Festival https://www.sandiego.org/explore/events/festivals-and-street-fairs/san-diego-fringe-festival.aspx
Get your tickets now or at the door, if available. Some shows sell out early. Stroll by the bay, enjoy a meal in the Gaslamp Quarter or on the expanding restaurant scene on Market Street. Don't forget to stop at the Donut  Bar on B street in the AM. Their donuts are works of art that have a creamy cake softness that melts in your mouth. The Donut Bar opens at 7:00AM and usually sell out before 1:00PM; standing in line for at least fifteen minutes is becoming an early morning tradition for regular customers.

Oh yea, stop by the BIG Kitchen in Golden Hills while you're at the Fringe Festival. It's a San Diego institution! Fringe Festival even has a musical about Judy and the Big Kitchen:

You may get a glimpse of Judy the Beauty humming, dancing around the kitchen, or just hanging out with regulars, swapping stories about the sixties and seventies, and SHE DOES have recollections about a lot of folks back in the day . . .even me   http://carpenoctum2.blogspot.com/2016/09/judy-beautythe-big-kitchen-saturday-am.html

Summer is only a few days away!

Part of A Legacy:Calvary Baptist Church San Diego

Those of you following me on Twitter and at The Center For World Music: https://centerforworldmusic.org/about-us/board/ know that I was a pianist at Calvary Baptist Church in San Diego California back in the day. Charles Ray was the organist/pianist, professor Jean Wesson was the music director. I also played accompanied the Calvary Baptist Church Youth Choir under the direction of Carol Durgan.  The church was known as Second Baptist in 1889 on the corner of  1st and B street. It was moved to  the corner of  then Crosby Street, https://www.calvarybcsd.org/history/   now known as 719 Cesar E. Chavez Pkwy. and at this time is following the leadership of pastor Dr. Emanuel Whipple Sr. And this Sunday in September 2012 Calvary Baptist Church had a Youth Choir Reunion Concert at 3:30. The concert was a musical extravaganza! This post is going viral so I must do a 2024 update: Hello Dr. Buchanon. Thank you for reading my post from 2012. I am honored!!!! Jellyfish around San Diego Embarcadero and Broadway Pier

Delores Fisher Blogger on an early Morning stroll Jellyfish are visiting the San Diego CA. Broadway Pier and Embarcadero again. Jellyfish appeared to swarm in this same area in 2012. Although I posted about the Black Nettle Jellyfish in July 2012, this was the first time since that year that I have seen any type of jellyfish in such numbers at the pier. http://carpenoctum2.blogspot.com/2012/08/black-sea-nettle-jellyfish-at.html   However, multiple sightings of similar and other jellyfish have increased since 2012. Several have been posted on youtube. 2015 has been an odd weather year for San Diego with heat and odd rainfall days (despite our drought). It is possible that temperature shifts are part of the reason why jellyfish are in our bays and near our beaches.  Our October weather has been unseasonably hot this early fall, similar to temperatures during earlier 2015 seasonal sightings.  Shannon Handy reported on a North County swarm of Sail jellyfish in May.

April 2023: A Glimpse of Homeless Performer Glen "Pops" Freeman's visit to San Diego CA in 2022 Post 4

Yes, I used the term homeless in the title as opposed to other more PC terms.  After reading various articles and blogs, including an enlightening reminder by Joe Omundson at  https://medium.com/ecofrugality/stop-confusing-homeless-and-houseless-39b055d29ea3  , the terms homeless and living on the streets seem to be labels these musicians and artists I will write about this summer prefer.                   Glen Pops Freeman photo by Delores Fisher They have shared their stories about COVID 19, feeling invisible, how they spend their daily lives, the precious flow time spent on the streets, maintaining hope while facing pandemic dynamics, a humbling experience they are allowing me to share with you.                                                     I've written about gen eral  homelessness in San Diego California from different socio-political perspectives over the years in various blog posts(for a recent [for a recent post, see https://carpenoctum2.blogspot.com/2022/07/the-unh
