Calvin Manson and his Ira Aldridge Players: Gospel At Colonus

Sophocles probably had no clue about the many future playwrights his work would inspire or play formats into which his play Oedipus at Colonus would morph.  The Ira Aldridge Players under the direction of founder Calvin Manson will present a compelling Gospel Music musical version The Gospel at Colonus opening on October Friday 19th  http://www.iarpplayers.org/index.html . Noting the entire trilogy, Joy Vandervort-Cobb of the Charleston City Paper in 2011 reminds readers, "And lest we forget, there is also Sophocles' Oedipus at Colonus, the last of Sophocles' three Theban plays (Oedipus the King, Antigone)."1.


I have had the pleasure of working with Calvin Manson on a couple of occasions. He is dynamic. As a director, he is gracious yet exacting. His work is creatively conceived on a longitudinal plane, yet he can be spontaneous when a gem of aesthetic beauty unfolds during the rehearsal process. His directorial choices have brought inspiration and pleasure to thousands. He is an award winning artist; the Gospel Musical is only one genre in which he works.
For those unfamiliar with Gospel musicals and adaptations, here is a collage from the Broadway production of Gospel at Colonus with several now well known artists including a young Morgan Freeman. However, this is San Diego California's Calvin Manson and the Ira Aldridge Theater's version:

Charles Ray was the organist/pianist, professor Jean Wesson was the music director. Jellyfish around San Diego Embarcadero and Broadway Pier

             Delores Fisher Blogger on an early Morning stroll Jellyfish are visiting the San Diego CA. Broadway Pier and Embarcadero again. Jellyfish appeared to swarm in this same area in 2012. Although I posted about the Black Nettle Jellyfish in July 2012, this was the first time since that year that I have seen any type of jellyfish in such numbers at the pier. http://carpenoctum2.blogspot.com/2012/08/black-sea-nettle-jellyfish-at.html   However, multiple sightings of similar and other jellyfish have increased since 2012. Several have been posted on youtube. 2015 has been an odd weather year for San Diego with heat and odd rainfall days (despite our drought). It is possible that temperature shifts are part of the reason why jellyfish are in our bays and near our beaches.  Our October weather has been unseasonably hot this early fall, similar to temperatures during earlier 2015 seasonal sightings.  Shannon Handy reported on a North County swarm of Sail jellyfish in May.

Richard Thompson Chamber Opera "Mask in the Mirror"

Richard Thompson has consented to an interview to discuss his new chamber opera: "Mask in the Mirror." The work-in-progress premiered informally at San Diego State University featuring School of Music and Dance vocal faculty and guest vocalists. Thompson has been working on the orchestration for approximately a year now. Originally from Aberdeen Scotland, Thompson is an assistant professor of music in San Diego State's School of Music and Dance. He will take time during his national summer performance schedule to give us not only an inside perspective on the inspiration behind "Mask in the Mirror," but also reflections on his compositional process as a pianist/composer.
